MICAS has announced the publication of the catalogue for its third exhibition in 2025, The Space we Inhabit, featuring Maltese artists Caesar Attard, Vince Briffa, Austin Camilleri, Joyce Camilleri, Anton Grech, and Pierre Portelli.

The catalogue is the second collaboration of MICAS with the renowned art publishers Skira, of Milan – a world leader in the publication of catalogues for major international exhibitions.

This high-quality publication features contributions from art historian Joseph Paul Cassar, MICAS Artistic Director Edith Devaney, as well as six wide-ranging interviews with the participating artists, revealing an array of intimate insights on their artistic development and styles.

In Malta, the book is on sale only at MICAS at its gift shop or online. The Space We Inhabit is on exhibition at MICAS in Floriana and will be on display until 28 September.

We are all the more delighted that we are placing Maltese art on the list of Skira’s extensive catalogue of publications,” said MICAS executive chairperson Phyllis Muscat. “We have committed ourselves to give Maltese contemporary art the international exposure it rightly deservers.”

In May, MICAS already published the catalogue of its opening exhibition Joana Vasconcelos: Transcending the Domestic, also on sale in its gift shop, as well as having published the catalogue of its digital-only, pre-opening exhibition Between Sea And Land. Forthcoming publications include catalogues for its recent Raymond Pitrè exhibition Figure in Rods, as well as its upcoming Milton Avery showcase, Colour, Form and Composition, also with Skira Arte.

This publication is not just a continuation of our assiduous documentatation of MICAS’s endeavour, but importantly it showcases to the world the trajectory of Maltese contemporary art.”

About the book

The Space We Inhabit is a compelling showcase that places some of Malta’s most celebrated contemporary artists firmly in the international spotlight.

The exhibition, which opened to the public on 14 June 2025, brings together the work of Caesar Attard, Vince Briffa, Joyce Camilleri, Austin Camilleri, Anton Grech, and Pierre Portelli. Spanning painting, sculpture, video, and sound installations, the works are displayed across all three levels of the MICAS museum, each exploring the broad and resonant theme of “space” – physical, emotional, imagined.

More than a celebration of Maltese art, the exhibition reflects the MICAS mission that Maltese artists cannot simply be limited by geography, but by the power and integrity of their ideas, which is why these artists find their rightful place in this Skira publication.

Artistic Director Edith Devaney curated the exhibition with an eye on both local identity and global relevance. “Each artist brings a distinct point of view,” she explained. “Together, their work provides a rigorous examination of space, expressed through deeply personal and visually ambitious pieces.”
