Charlie Cauchi is an interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker living in Malta. Her work encompasses video, sound, text, archive and built environments. Her practice is a hybrid, amalgamating documentary practices, academic research, and fantastical construction. She completed a BA in Film Studies at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in 2009. She was awarded a scholarship to complete an MA in Film Studies at QMUL in 2010 and received a fully-funded PhD scholarship from the aforementioned institution. She has authored several academic papers on Maltese filmmaking, and in 2015 she co-authored the Malta edition of the Intellect series World Film Locations. Charlie’s three-year project Latitude 36, formed part of Malta’s European Capital of Culture Programme in 2018. It focused on the Maltese diaspora in different parts of the world and comprised multiple components, including a solo installation and a short documentary film. Entitled From Malta to Motor City, the film centred on the Maltese community in Michigan, USA. Charlie is the founder and creative director of Sajjetta Ltd, an independent audiovisual production company. She is producing and directing her first documentary feature, Of Vice and Men. Charlie also co-founded Rosa Kwir in 2021 with artist Romeo Roxman Gatt. Rosa Kwir is Malta’s first dedicated LGBTQI+ gallery and archive. Her latest art project includes Beyond Site, a multiplatform and interdisciplinary work focused on depicting the Maltese landscape in visiting foreign productions (supported by Arts Council Malta and Spazju Kreattiv).
