The Fougasse – the stone mortar of Malta

by BDL

The particular prototype FOUGASSE [a comparatively basic but devastating, rock-cut stone mortar] can be dated precisely. It was test-fired by Military Engineer Francesco Marandon on 28/09/1740. The smooth-sided, 4m deep and 1.8m wide, conical funnel [angled at ca.50] was packed with gunpowder at the bottom, and filled with several tons of stone projectiles. Ignited by a fuse, it fired this hail of rocks as high as 80m into the air, up to a distance of 300m , spreading out across.
