Another Open Weekend at MICAS with free entry in March

Free art and history tours, as well as children’s games, will be the hallmark of yet another Open Weekend at the Malta International Contemporary Art Space.

Free art and history tours, as well as children’s games, will be the hallmark of yet another Open Weekend at the Malta International Contemporary Art Space.
Malta’s newest cultural destination will celebrate its ongoing showcase of American icon Milton Avery with two days of free public access on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 March.
Visitors will enjoy free access to the exhibition Colour, Form & Composition: Milton Avery and his Enduring Influence on Contemporary Painting, with a total of 58 artworks from Avery as well as seven other contemporary artists influenced by his work: Henni Alftan, Harold Ancart, March Avery, Andrew Cranston, Gary Hume, Nicolas Party, and Jonas Wood.
“It is our pleasure to host the public for two fun-filled days for children, as well as a host of guided tours around our current art exhibition, and the history and architecture of MICAS,” MICAS executive chairperson Phyllis Muscat said.
“Our Open Weekend reflects MICAS’s commitment towards community engagement, which we have bolstered with our free admission on Sundays – our guided tours, and creative activities for children are a vibrant celebration that brings  together art, history, nature, and play here at our museum’s unique campus,” Muscat added.
Children will enjoy educational activities on both days from 10am to 6pm, experiencing actual painting with Avery In Action and a collective canvas, drawing, and games like Shape Detective and giant chess, Jenga and 4-in-a-line, as well as a plant hunt.
Other family activities include exhibition tours of the Avery exhibition, together with a children’s art tour, and guided tours of the history and architecture at MICAS.
Special reading sessions will also be held on both days, as well as a yoga session at MICAS on Sunday 8 March from 10am to 11am.
At the MICAS Open Weekend, visitors enjoy access to all MICAS spaces and ongoing exhibitions, which include Beyond the Bastions, a display that chronicles the genesis of MICAS; and the mind-bending sculptures of British contemporary artist Conrad Shawcross, housed in the MICAS barrel vaults.
