The Nicolas Party impact: as in Malta, so in South Korea

Just as in MICAS’s dialogue between American modernist Milton Avery and contemporary artists of today like Party, the artist speaks on the serendipitious pairing of historical and contemporary works

Hats off to Swiss artist Nicolas Party, one of our seven contemporary artists showing in the Milton Avery showcase Colour, Form & Composition: Milton Avery and His Enduring Influence on Contemporary Painting.
KoreanAir’s Morning Calm interviews the artist following his recent solo exhibition at the Ho-Am Art Museum, which hosts an ancient art collection where his work was displayed side by side in the same space.
Just as in MICAS’s dialogue between American modernist Milton Avery and contemporary artists of today like Party, the artist says he was excited to see what kind of dialogue would unfold between the historical and contemporary works.
“Cave-like landscapes imbued with fine dust created by pastels, and portraits that straddle the line between reality and fantasy. Based on this unique visual language, one artist is currently attracting significant attention in the international art world. Born in Switzerland and based in New York, Nicolas Party has cultivated a unique aesthetic by incorporating intense colour and a simplified sculptural sensibility while retaining classical forms. Once considered a peripheral medium, Party expands pastel into a medium that bridges painting, drawing, and sculpture, adding new experimentation to the tradition. Furthermore, he transforms entire exhibition spaces into painterly scenes, fluidly crossing the boundaries between painting and installation.”
