Located at the Ospizio complex in Floriana, Malta, MICAS is a dynamic, contemporary multifunctional art space. The chosen location, within the historical San Salvatore bastions is rich in historical significance, outstanding sea views, precise military architecture, large open and intricate landscaped spaces. In contrast to all the sensitive restoration of the fortification, the internal space of the Museum Galleries is designed as a contemporary art space, incorporating a Mediterranean, regional and International identity. The Galleries comprise of a number of interchangeable, moveable and flexible exhibition spaces as well as many other spaces; educational/research areas, outdoor galleries, recreational spaces, media spaces, workshop and facility spaces, a Sculpture and events gardens, and more. Built on four levels, level 3, is the main entrance level to MICAS, along with the ticket office, the main reception area, the main gallery atrium.
Designed by the internationally acclaimed multi-disciplinary studio FormaFantasma, the shop hosts a mix of spatial hubs showcasing a variety of products. From books to jewellery to bespoke products, the MICAS shop will cater for Tourists, families, Art enthusiasts, students, and more. All our visitors, are welcome as the aim of this museum shop is for it to be a destination in its own right and as an integral part of the museum and the visitor experience.
Valletta is home to a vibrant restaurant scene, with numerous options including restaurants, bars, and cafes. Our Restaurant will offer a distinct advantage: a unique and unparalleled setting – a contemporary art museum, historic bastions, and a sculpture garden. The MICAS Restaurant sets itself apart not just through its exceptional food and service, but also through this truly immersive dining experience.
The MICAS Sculpture Garden, terraces, and outdoor spaces will function as open-air galleries integral to the MICAS strategy for the showcasing of contemporary art. As inclusive, permeable spaces, the Sculpture Garden and terraces will offer the public access to future acquisitions, loaned and commissioned temporary sculptural works, interactive exhibitions for large-scale outdoor installations, and performative projects, and other events. The outdoor galleries will complement the indoor galleries and greatly enhance the potential of MICAS to offer a strong and varied exhibition programme. They will host dynamic displays of contemporary art, which the public can freely access, interact with, and enjoy..

The MICAS project will augment Malta’s standing as a centre for creative innovation, catalysing the country as a proactive player in the contemporary art world, regionally and internationally.
